Located on the west hills of Tijuana, Cumbres enjoys some of the
most beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean and Isla Coronado. Established by
the State government in the mid 1970's, its initial name was Bella Vista
(beautiful view); but, a clerk switched it with the names of a nearby
community.
The initial housing development of brick and mortar can be seen along
the main street (Aconcagua). These small units for small families soon
were enveloped by irregular settlers and carton housing. Small urban
development has taken place and only now has drainage and sewage been
build. Inhabitants do have access to electricity, telephone, and
Internet, water and garbage collection. The high costs and poor quality
of services regularly force inhabitants to connect themselves to the
power grid or dump garbage on empty lots.
Most inhabitants work at assembly plants (maquiladoras), service or
commerce companies. There is one kinder garden, an elementary school, a
junior high school; all public. There is small commerce activity in the
form of small grocery stores. There are large assembly plants next to
the community that provide much of the jobs for this community.
Cumbres is the oldest member of the Corazón Community.
It currently has 120 families and 457 participants.
