Corazón’s mission of ‘building community by strengthening families, enabling service, promoting self-sufficiency and inspiring mutually beneficial relationships across borders,’ is accomplished through its five program areas - Adult, Youth, Academics, Construction and Sustained Development.
As part of its Sustained Development program, all donations received in the U.S. and Mexico go to the Corazón exchange. On a monthly basis, families exchange hours they have accumulated by completing community service projects in their communities. Items donated are about the seasonal things that every family needs. Each donation drive requires preparation, item collection, and delivery of the donations. Thank you for helping Build Community. Click for instructions.
Winter Survival - Flyer This is the cruelest month with cold temperatures and lots of rain. Create a survival kit for the families. Take a 32-gallon trashcan and a plastic tarpaulins, rope, shovel, bucket, caulking, and caulking gun, flashlight, batteries, and cleaning supplies.
Libraries - Flyer Education is a priority for Corazón. Help us cultivate the joy of reading and learning. Fill a crate with Spanish language books and magazines of different levels. Your group can also adopt one of our libraries and keep the books organized and the magazines current.
Work Clothes and Tools - Flyer Good work tools help the men and women get better jobs. They also use them for Corazón projects and to help their neighbors. Start with a toolbox or plastic crate, add a tool belt, gloves, and new (or used) hand tools (hammer, screwdrivers, tape measures, chalk lines, levels, utility knife etc.)
Babies and Toddlers - Flyer Clean out your garage and closets of those clean, useable but unneeded items. Take a laundry basket or diaper bag and fill it with diapers, baby wipes, baby powder, and other toiletries. Washtubs, baby carriers and high chairs are also welcome.
Community Centers- Flyer The Corazón’s five community centers have the same needs as any office, only more so. Gather office supplies (copy paper, note pads, pens, paper clips, staples, ink cartridges etc.), cleaning supplies (Clorox, towels, disinfectant, etc.) and bathroom supplies (toilet paper, soap, etc.)
Camp Corazón - Flyer Camp runs for the month of July, involves over 350 students and offers recreational and educational classes. Begin with a plastic storage bin and fill with notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, scissors, rulers, construction and copy paper, and other school supplies.
Bathrooms & Hygiene- Flyer Bathrooms are always running out of essentials. Your group can fill a small trashcan with cleaning supplies, towels, toilet paper, brushes, soap, and other hygiene items.
Back to School - Flyer If the Mexican kids cannot afford school supplies, they don’t go to school. Each member of your group can start with a backpack, fill it with, paper, pencils, notebooks, glue, and all the other supplies school kids need.
Kitchens - Flyer Start with laundry baskets and fill it with pots, pans, utensils, silverware, dishtowels, cleaning supplies, and other kitchen items.
House Repairs - Flyer Participants often need to do minor repairs around their home. Begin with a large bucket and fill with caulking, caulking gun, hammer, screwdriver, a small package of nails, a small package of screws, utility knife, tape measure, flashlight, and batteries.
Canned Goods - Flyer Food is always needed. Canned goods are especially appreciated because they can be stored and used when the need is greatest. When collecting canned goods remember that Mexican food preferences are different from those in the United States. Take a plastic crate and fill it with canned goods of all types and sizes.
Special Events - Flyer Special events include soccer tournaments and clinics and Christmas, Mothers’ day and Day of the Child parties. You can create a family basket that includes food, hygiene items, potpourri, knick-knacks, candles and other small items. Or send sporting goods for a sports clinic.
