Sustainable Development

There are no handouts in Corazón; in an effort to promote self-sufficiency and a strong social support system, everything is earned through community service.

Participants gain hours for community service by participating in a variety of different projects. They can teach a class to their neighbors or provide tutoring for young children in the community center. They can help repair a neighbor's home, work in the daycare center, clean a local school and much, much more. All projects are pre-approved by the leadership committee in each community.

As participants perform community service, they earn hours they can exchange for in-kind donations and construction projects. More importantly they build friendships, alliances and support systems, a true sense of community and belonging. This social network provides a long-term solution to many of their immediate needs and empowers families to create a better future.

EXCHANGES

Participants are offered regular opportunities to exchange their hard earned hours of community service for items such as food, clothing, blankets, furniture, materials and toys. This is an important part of the Corazón program as these exchanges offer additional motivation for service, while allowing the participants the opportunity to maintain their dignity and self-esteem. If you would like to contribute in-kind donations or help with delivering these donations to Mexico, please write to This email address is being protected from spambots. COMMUNITY CENTERS

FOOD RELIEF

The Food Relief Program is more than just providing food to our participant families. It is about providing them with the basic support and resources they need. The objective of this program is to build a basic food stock that will allow needy participants to exchange the hours they volunteer in the community for basic food to support their families during the tough times. Families are also required to participate in vegetable gardening classes in order to discover sustainable ways to provide healthy meals for themselves.
